My inspiration does not come from my environment but from within myself. My chosen environment (the Isle of Harris by the Atlantic sea shore) is a free space both intellectually and physically. Here is a vast space to be free to develop a visual form of expression. I do not wish simply to be a painter of the Hebrides but to express an aspect of what it is to be human. There is more to painting than to mimic and make the world seem beautiful.
The relative isolation of the island, especially in the winter and the pure forces of nature, nothing is resting, its' never quite the same, never sure or secure. This to me has echoes of the human condition and why I say my paintings are Expressions using the Human Figure. Or more traditionally "Figures in a Landscape".
